Tesla is facing a proposed class-action lawsuit accusing it of manipulating odometer readings to shorten warranty coverage, according to court filings. Plaintiff Nyree Hinton claims his Model Y’s odometer overstated mileage by up to 15%, causing his basic warranty to expire prematurely.
Hinton alleges Tesla ties warranty limits and lease caps to artificially inflated mileage, boosting repair revenue and forcing early warranty purchases. He says the discrepancy left him with a $10,000 repair bill that should have been covered.
The lawsuit, now in federal court, could impact over a million California drivers. Tesla has not commented but denies the allegations.
