Hochul Unveils $30 Million Boost for Electric Vehicle Rebates and Charging Access in New York

Governor Kathy Hochul announced Friday that an additional $30 million is now available to help New Yorkers lease or purchase electric vehicles, expanding the state’s Drive Clean Rebate program and upgrading incentives for EV charging infrastructure.

The expanded funding will support point-of-sale rebates for more than 60 new EV models and increase accessibility to EV chargers at multifamily buildings, workplaces, and hotels. The initiative is part of New York’s broader push to reduce emissions, cut transportation pollution, and make electric driving more affordable and convenient.

“New York’s leadership in driving the adoption of electric vehicles is helping consumers stay within their budget when purchasing or leasing a new electric car,” Hochul said. “These investments are key to building a cleaner future, lowering emissions and creating good-paying jobs.”

Administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), the Drive Clean Rebate provides up to $2,000 off the sticker price of eligible EVs. More than 190,000 rebates have been issued since the program launched in 2017, contributing to the 280,000 EVs currently on New York roads.

The Charge Ready NY 2.0 program will now offer $3,000 per charging port at eligible locations and up to $4,000 per port in disadvantaged communities. These incentives help offset installation costs for Level 2 chargers and aim to reduce range anxiety by improving access to charging where people live and work.

Governor Hochul’s announcement also included updates on the EVolve NY network. The New York Power Authority’s fast-charging initiative now has 240 chargers across 56 sites and is on track to install 400 by 2026. Construction begins this month on the largest site yet, at LaGuardia Airport, which will include 12 high-speed chargers.

Additional projects are underway across New York City, including new fast-charging hubs in the Bronx and Brooklyn. NYPA and the Office of General Services are also continuing to expand charging infrastructure on state-owned property, with nearly 600 charging ports already in place and another 600 in development.
