A fully involved barn fire drew a large emergency response Friday in Cayuga County, with multiple departments from across the region rushing to the scene near Route 34 and Center Road in the town of Scipio.
The fire saw units from Scipio, Poplar Ridge, Long Hill, Union Springs, Moravia, Genoa, Fleming, Aurelius, and Owasco responding to the scene, along with Southern Cayuga Ambulance. A tanker box was also dispatched to supply additional water to the rural location.
Scipio’s chief arrived first and took command, as fire crews worked quickly to get water on the flames. Despite their efforts, the barn was already fully engulfed. According to dispatch updates from Cayuga/Seneca Fire Wire, the structure collapsed within 40 minutes, and crews shifted focus to extinguishing remaining hot spots.
Crews from Genoa, Poplar Ridge, and other neighboring departments provided full staffing on engines and tankers, with Owasco’s Rapid Intervention Team also on site.
No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire has not been released. The incident underscores the critical role of interdepartmental coordination in rural fire response.
