Colorado TABOR Refund 2025: How to Claim Your $800 or $1,600 Check

Colorado residents could be in line for a big payday this April. The state is issuing new Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR) refunds — with individual payments of up to $800 for single filers and $1,600 for joint filers.

The refunds are part of a 2025 payout authorized due to excess tax revenue collected by the state in 2024. If you qualify, this could be one of the easiest ways to boost your bank account this spring.

Who Qualifies for the April 2025 TABOR Refund?

To get a refund, you must meet all of the following:

  • Be a full-year Colorado resident in 2024
  • Be 18 years or older by January 1, 2025
  • File a 2024 Colorado state income tax return (or a PTC Rebate application) by October 15, 2025

Refunds are issued automatically if you meet those requirements. No extra paperwork is needed unless you’re applying via the Property Tax, Rent, Heat Rebate (PTC) program.

When Will TABOR Refund Checks Be Sent?

Most refund payments are scheduled for April 2025, though the exact timeline depends on when you filed your 2024 Colorado tax return:

  • If you filed by April 15, 2025:
You’ll likely get your refund in mid to late April
  • If you file later (but before October 15):
Your refund will be issued within 60 days of your return being processed

Refunds will arrive via direct deposit or paper check, depending on how you filed.

How Much Will You Get?

The refund amount is based on filing status:

  • $800 for single filers
  • $1,600 for joint filers

These are flat-rate refunds under Colorado law — meaning everyone who qualifies gets the same amount, regardless of income.

What If I Don’t File Taxes?

If you don’t file a traditional tax return but still meet the income and age requirements, you can apply for the PTC Rebate, which also qualifies you for a TABOR refund. You must submit that application by October 15, 2025, to be eligible.

Why Is Colorado Sending TABOR Refunds?

Under Colorado’s Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR), the state must return excess revenue to residents when collections exceed a cap tied to inflation and population growth.

In 2024, Colorado brought in more than the limit, triggering automatic refunds for 2025. This isn’t a one-time check from federal stimulus funds — it’s a refund of your tax dollars under state law.

Final Reminder

If you:

  • Lived in Colorado all of 2024
  • Are 18 or older as of January 1, 2025
  • File a 2024 tax return (or PTC Rebate application)

Then you’re in line for an $800 or $1,600 TABOR refund. File by April 15 for the fastest payment. Missed the deadline? File by October 15 to still get your money.
