Author to Explore Lafayette’s Historic Visit to Finger Lakes at Seneca Falls Event

A new look at the Marquis de Lafayette’s celebrated tour of America will take center stage in Seneca Falls next month, shedding light on the French general’s little-known journey through the Finger Lakes region.

The Seneca Falls Historical Society will welcome author Chris Carosa on Saturday, May 24 at 11 a.m. to discuss his latest book, History Unleashed: Lafayette’s Remarkable Tour of the Greater Western New York Area. The event will be held in the dining room of the Becker Mansion, located at 55 Cayuga Street.

In 1825—fifty years after helping the United States secure its independence—Lafayette traveled across the growing nation, including stops in western New York and through the Finger Lakes. Historical records suggest he likely passed through Seneca Falls on what was then the Great Genesee Road, now New York State Route 5, possibly right by the Wilhelmus Mynderse property.

Carosa’s presentation will focus on the local portion of Lafayette’s tour and its significance to the region and the young country as a whole. Copies of his book will be available for purchase and signing following the talk.

Admission is $8 for Historical Society members and $10 for the public. No pre-registration is required. For more information, contact the Seneca Falls Historical Society at (315) 568-8412 or visit their social media pages.
