At a NYSEG community event in the Southern Tier residents voiced growing frustration over skyrocketing electric bills, with some reporting monthly charges tripling. Steuben County Legislature Chairwoman Kelly Fitzpatrick, also concerned about her own costs, helped organize the session and called electricity a necessity, not a luxury.
NYSEG officials blamed rising supply prices—especially during winter—for the increases, not the recent switch to smart meters. They emphasized their role as a delivery company, not energy generators, and said they aim to build trust through such events.
Despite reassurances, calls for an independent investigation into NYSEG’s billing practices continue from local lawmakers.
