Why Your April 2025 Social Security Payment Might Be Delayed

  • / Updated:
  • Digital Team

Many Social Security recipients expected checks this week—but some are still waiting. If your April 2025 payment hasn’t arrived yet, you’re not alone.

Here are the most common reasons for a late deposit, and what you can do about it.

Fourth of July: Why you won’t get any payments this Monday

1. Your Payment Date Doesn’t Match This Week

Social Security checks are paid based on your birthday:

  • April 10: Those born on the 1st–10th
  • April 17: Birthdays from the 11th–20th
  • April 24: Birthdays from the 21st–31st
  • April 1: SSI recipients
  • March 29: People who receive both SSI and Social Security

If your birthday doesn’t fall into this week’s group, your check may not be due yet.

2. Your Bank Is Delaying the Deposit

Even if the Social Security Administration sent your payment on time, your bank may take extra time to post it. This is common with:

  • Smaller credit unions
  • Online banks without real-time processing
  • Holidays or weekends near your payment date

Deposits may show up a day late depending on your bank’s internal schedule.

3. Your Account Information Changed

If you recently updated your direct deposit account or address, this could delay your payment. Changes made through My Social Security or by phone sometimes take one full cycle to go into effect.

Check your SSA account to verify your payment details.

4. SSA System Delays or Errors

In rare cases, technical issues at the Social Security Administration cause payment disruptions. These include:

  • Computer system outages
  • Backlogs from staffing shortages
  • Delays in payment file processing

If SSA hasn’t processed your payment yet, it may arrive a few days late.

What You Should Do

  1. Wait at least three business days. SSA asks recipients to wait before reporting a missing payment.
  2. Check your bank account and SSA portal. Look for pending payments or error notices.
  3. Call SSA if still missing. After the waiting period, call 1-800-772-1213 or visit your local SSA office.

When to Expect Your Next Payment

If you weren’t due this week, your next possible deposit date is April 24. That check goes to people born between the 21st and 31st.
