DOJ Sues Maine Over Transgender Athletes in School Sports

The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a civil suit against Maine’s Education Department, alleging it violated Title IX by allowing transgender girls to compete in girls’ sports, the Trump administration announced Tuesday.

Attorney General Pam Bondi said Maine repeatedly defied a federal order banning transgender athletes from girls’ teams, prompting legal action. The DOJ seeks to block further participation and revoke past athletic titles won by trans students. Only two openly transgender high school athletes currently compete in the state.

Gov. Janet Mills has defended Maine’s policies, arguing they align with state law and accusing the administration of using the issue for political gain.
