SAFETY MOMENT: Climbing Safety – 3 Points of Contact

Spring is the perfect time to discuss climbing safety as we start to perform the seasonal cleaning and housekeeping tasks at home. At Seneca Meadows, we regularly discuss the importance of 3 points of contact when using a ladder, climbing in and out of vehicles, and heavy equipment. At home, this translates into ladder and step stool safety.

5 tips for safe climbing at home:

  • Always use the right tool for climbing and avoid using a chair.
  • Always use 3 points of contact – two hands and a foot, or two feet and a hand.
  • Keep your body near the middle of the step.
  • Always face the ladder while climbing.
  • An extension or straight ladder used to access an elevated surface must extend at least 3 feet above the point of support.
  • Step gingerly when getting on or off the ladder, or when shifting your weight.
