Homers by Pete Alonso, Juan Soto not enough as Mets fall to Twins (highlights)

Juan Soto and Pete Alonso each went deep, but it wasn’t enough as the New York Mets (11-6) fell to the Minnesota Twins (6-12), 6-3, on Tuesday night at Target Field.

Alonso opened the scoring with a solo homer in the first, his fifth of the season, while Soto tied the game in the fourth with a 351-foot blast to right. But, Bailey Ober settled in after the early damage, limiting the Mets to just three hits through six innings and retiring seven straight at one point.

The Mets found life again in the seventh. Mark Vientos singled, and Luis Torrens followed with a double. Jesse Winker, pinch-hitting for Tyrone Taylor, drove in a run with a sac fly to make it 4-3, but Francisco Lindor grounded out to end the threat. In the ninth, defensive miscues by the Twins gave the Mets a final chance, but Lindor struck out with the tying run on base.

Tylor Megill allowed four runs (two earned) over five innings, hampered by a costly Lindor error and some tough breaks. Reliever Max Kranick, scoreless through his first 10 innings this season, surrendered two runs in 1.2 frames, including a solo homer in the seventh.

Box Score

The Mets wrap up their series with Minnesota on Wednesday at 1:10 p.m. as they look to take two of three.
