Deputies charged four men with criminal trespass after they were allegedly caught exiting a former school building in Cayuga County during a routine property check.

According to the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy observed a suspicious vehicle behind the old Emily Howland School around 9:32 p.m. on March 23. The property, located in the Town of Scipio, is privately owned and known to be a frequent site of trespassing.

The deputy saw four individuals exiting the building. They were identified as Daniel J. Talavera of Macedon, Lucas A. Lyons of Farmington, Zakary J. Vanderwege of Palmyra, and Evan M. Haggett of Victor. All four were later charged with third-degree criminal trespass, a class B misdemeanor, on April 3.

They were released on appearance tickets and ordered to appear in the Town of Scipio Court on April 7 at 6:30 p.m.

The Sheriff’s Office urges anyone with information about the incident to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously through the department’s website or the SaferWatch app.
