Scandal-plagued former Gov. Andrew Cuomo gained a major boost in New York City’s mayoral race Monday, according to POLITICO, after securing endorsements from two of the city’s most influential unions. 32BJ SEIU and the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council, both of which previously supported Mayor Eric Adams, are now backing Cuomo following Adams’ decision to run as an independent.
Union leaders, once critical of Cuomo during his 2021 resignation, now highlight his leadership and labor-friendly record. The endorsements give Cuomo access to extensive ground support from over 120,000 union members and reinforce his campaign’s message of strength and experience.
Cuomo faces a fragmented Democratic field with no clear challenger polling competitively. While other unions have yet to endorse, Cuomo’s early labor backing and deep campaign resources position him as the current front-runner.
