The IRS says more than 1.1 million Americans could lose out on over $1 billion in unclaimed tax refunds from 2021 — but time is running out.
To claim the money, eligible taxpayers must file their 2021 tax return by April 15, 2025. After that date, the law bars any refund from being issued and the funds go to the U.S. Treasury.
Average Refunds Range Between $600 and $900

The median refund ranges from $600 to nearly $1,000 depending on the state. For example:
- New York: $995 median refund; 73,000 people eligible
- California: $600 median refund; 116,300 people eligible
- Texas: $810 median refund; 102,200 people eligible
- Florida: $732 median refund; 69,800 people eligible
The full list of states and refund amounts is available on IRS.gov.
Refunds May Include Earned Income and Recovery Credits
If you didn’t file a 2021 return, you might be missing more than just a basic refund. Eligible filers could also receive:
- Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) — worth up to $6,728 for families
- Recovery Rebate Credit — for those who missed a 2021 stimulus payment
- Overpaid tax withholdings or estimated tax credits
Refunds will be reduced or withheld if the taxpayer owes federal or state back taxes, student loans, or unpaid child support.
