State eases correction officer ban—partially

New York has loosened restrictions on rehiring correction officers fired for striking, but only at the local level, according to a revised executive order signed April 9 by Gov. Kathy Hochul.

Executive Order 47.4 ends the ban on hiring and promoting those workers in cities and counties, though the state blacklist remains. Officers must still be recertified before returning to law enforcement jobs. The order also authorizes extra pay, overtime, and emergency procurement powers for agencies handling the ongoing crisis.

The policy stems from a 22-day unsanctioned strike in February over staffing, safety, and overtime. Despite union disapproval, officers said conditions had become dangerous, prompting the walkout.
