Newfield schools to launch inclusive preschool special ed program

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

Newfield Central School District is preparing to open a new integrated special education classroom for preschoolers and kindergartners starting in the 2025–26 school year. The state-approved program will serve children ages 3 to 5, blending students with disabilities and those developing typically.

Each classroom will include 12 students, a teacher, and two aides, with no more than half of the students having an individualized education program (IEP). Funded by Tompkins County, the initiative aims to mirror services offered by local provider Racker, while expanding access and classroom capacity.

The program will be housed at Newfield Elementary. Future plans include possibly serving neighboring counties and reopening special education classes for grades K–2.
