The New York Yankees’ losing streak extended to three games on Tuesday afternoon as they were shut out by the Detroit Tigers, 5-0, in the second matchup of their series at Comerica Park.
Carlos Carrasco took the mound for New York and held Detroit in check early, but things unraveled in the fourth. After giving up a run in the second, he surrendered three solo home runs in the fourth to Spencer Torkelson, Zach McKinstry, and Dillon Dingler. Carrasco exited in the fifth after allowing four earned runs on six hits over 4.1 innings, striking out three.
New York’s offense had little success against Tigers ace Tarik Skubal. The Yankees threatened in the first inning with singles from Paul Goldschmidt and Ben Rice, but couldn’t cash in as Aaron Judge, Jazz Chisholm Jr., and Anthony Volpe failed to produce. Skubal then settled in, retiring 16 straight batters and finishing with six scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and striking out six.
Paul Goldschmidt was the lone offensive highlight for the Yankees, going 3-for-4 for his third three-hit game of the season. Judge added two hits, but the rest of the lineup struggled, combining for just one hit and no walks.
Ian Hamilton made his season debut after coming off the injured list and looked sharp, striking out two in a scoreless inning.
The Yankees will try to avoid the three-game sweep on Wednesday at 1:10 p.m., with Max Fried set to face Jack Flaherty.
