REAL ID deadline forces travel ID decisions

With a federal deadline for REAL ID fast approaching, New Yorkers must upgrade their driver’s licenses to fly domestically.

Starting May 7, standard licenses won’t be accepted at airport checkpoints. Travelers must choose between a REAL ID or the more versatile Enhanced ID, which costs $30 more but allows land and sea travel to Canada and Mexico.

Both upgrades require an in-person DMV visit, and officials warn of long lines. Some may opt for a passport instead, but local leaders suggest the Enhanced ID offers the most convenience for frequent border crossers.
