New York urges travelers to get MMR vaccine

With measles cases on the rise, the New York State Department of Health is advising travelers to get the MMR vaccine before heading to outbreak areas, especially abroad or to states like Texas and New Mexico.

Though New York has only recorded four cases this year, the national and Canadian surges — largely among unvaccinated children — have sparked concern. Measles spreads easily through air or contaminated surfaces and can cause serious complications like pneumonia or brain damage.

Health officials recommend two vaccine doses for near-total protection. Those recently exposed to measles are urged to quarantine and monitor symptoms for up to three weeks post-exposure.
