The Genoa Town Board moved forward on several key items during its regular meeting on March 12, including approving the purchase of two new trucks for the highway department and continuing discussions on expanding the town’s water district.
Highway Superintendent Paul Wheeler told the board that winter had been especially rough, with the town using more salt and sand than in recent years. He reported that crews have already started hauling materials in preparation for summer roadwork. The board unanimously approved the purchase of a 2025 Ford F-250 for $71,992 and a 2025 Ford F-550 for $125,990. Both trucks will replace aging vehicles, which will be auctioned.
In other infrastructure updates, the town reported pumping nearly 1.9 million gallons of water in February, up significantly from the same month last year. Supervisor Don Slocum said the proposed expansion of the water district along southern Route 34 remains under discussion, with legal issues and pricing logistics still to be resolved. A committee meeting is planned to review electricity and operational costs.
Engineer John LaGorga from MRB Group briefed the board on a Cayuga Lake protection study being conducted for the Cayuga County Water Authority.
Code Enforcement Officer Kevin Foster provided a detailed update on inspections and permits. He also introduced a new building permit application for review and public distribution.
Assessor Jay Franklin reported near-total compliance with agricultural and senior exemption updates. He also noted progress in digitizing records and plans for upcoming property reviews as weather improves.
The board approved several routine financial actions, including February bills, budget transfers, and a QuickBooks software update. Clerk Shannon Armstrong shared a monthly report showing limited licensing activity but steady revenue.
Dog control activity was minimal, though one ticket and a notice were issued in response to a continuing complaint on Route 90.
In committee discussions, board members agreed to continue using M&L Mowing for town lawn care, citing satisfaction with the service. The town also acknowledged a $655 safety award check from Comp Alliance and confirmed new uniforms had been ordered for highway staff.
The board heard a request from the West Genoa Cemetery for financial support to restore a Civil War memorial statue. The restoration is expected to cost $43,000.
The meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m. following a motion by board member Joe Philip.
