Ontario County backs reuse center to cut landfill waste

With its landfill set to close in 2028, Ontario County is investing in waste reduction by funding a new reuse initiative in Geneva, according to the Finger Lakes Times.

Supervisors approved $100,000 to help launch ReUse Systems, a nonprofit aiming to divert furniture, appliances, and building materials from the trash stream. The group will partner with Finger Lakes ReUse and operate retail and repair services while creating job training opportunities.

Leaders praised the project as a sustainable step forward, though one supervisor questioned the funding. Organizers plan to open the facility countywide and hope to expand over time.
