Canandaigua’s fire department has added to its ranks of certified Hazardous Materials Technicians after completing the final modules of a rigorous state training program last week.
Firefighters with Canandaigua Professional Firefighters I.A.F.F. Local 2098 wrapped up Modules 4 and 5 of the New York State Hazardous Materials Technician course. They had previously completed Modules 1 through 3 in 2023, along with the Hazardous Materials Incident Command course earlier this year.
The training, led by instructors from the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control, covered both advanced techniques and critical refreshers. Among the skills reviewed were product and tank identification, plugging and patching, product neutralization and transfer, liquid burnoff, bonding and grounding, and decontamination procedures.
The department now has 14 certified Hazardous Materials Technicians on staff, bolstering its readiness to handle a wide range of high-risk emergency scenarios. Officials credited NYS OFPC for delivering high-quality instruction throughout the training process.
