The New York Yankees’ offense struggled against Zac Gallen, managing just three hits off the right-hander before a late rally fell short in a 4-3 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on a chilly Wednesday night in the Bronx.
Carlos Rodón had a rocky start, giving up a towering home run to Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in the first inning. A defensive miscue in the second led to another Arizona run before Ketel Marte’s two-out RBI single extended the Diamondbacks’ lead to 4-0. Despite the rough beginning, Rodon settled in, finishing six innings while allowing four runs on three hits and four walks with five strikeouts.
New York’s struggles at the plate were magnified by Gallen’s dominance. He entered the game with 12 career scoreless innings against the Yankees and kept that streak alive, striking out 13 in 6.2 innings while allowing only three hits. The Yankees’ best chance came in the second inning, but Jasson Domínguez and Ben Rice struck out with two runners in scoring position.
The offense finally showed life in the ninth when Anthony Volpe belted a three-run homer off AJ Puk to cut the deficit to one. However, the rally ended as Austin Wells and Dominguez went down in order.
The Yankees look to avoid the series sweep on Thursday night, with Carlos Carrasco set to make his first start as a Yankee.
