Former Geneva American Legion commander indicted for embezzling over $100,000

A Geneva man who once led a local chapter of the American Legion has been indicted for allegedly stealing more than $100,000 from the organization over several years.

Dale Mosher, former commander of the Geneva American Legion Winnek Post 396, is charged with second-degree grand larceny. Prosecutors allege he embezzled cash from the veterans group between December 2015 and May 2023, using the funds for personal gain.

The Ontario County District Attorney’s Office announced the indictment during a press conference Tuesday, emphasizing the seriousness of the charge. “Stealing from a service group such as this, from our veterans, is something that will not be tolerated and will not go unpunished,” said District Attorney James Ritts.

Mosher’s alleged theft occurred in small increments over the span of more than seven years while he served as post commander. The charges stem from a lengthy investigation that began after financial discrepancies raised alarms within the organization.

Current commander AJ Fratto voiced frustration over the betrayal. “We want to maintain the traditions, and it’s really difficult to do that when you’ve got people stealing from you, especially your own kind,” he said.

Mosher was first arrested in April 2024. His indictment marks a significant step forward in the case, which prosecutors say is still in its early stages. He is scheduled to appear in Ontario County Court for arraignment on April 17.
