A judge has temporarily halted enforcement of a New York law that limits legislators’ outside earnings, pending the outcome of a Republican-led appeal, according to the Times Union.
The 2023 law caps outside income at $35,000 annually and was tied to a $32,000 salary increase for lawmakers. Around 38 legislators, mostly Republicans, could be affected. Critics argue the law is unconstitutional and unfairly impacts those re-elected before it took effect.
While the judge upheld the income limit as legal, she struck down a provision allowing lawmakers to lose voting rights if they violate it. With the stay in place, discussions about delaying the law’s implementation may now be paused as the appeal proceeds.
