Cayuga County officials urge drivers to share the road as farm traffic increases

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

With spring underway, the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office is reminding drivers to stay alert and slow down as farm vehicles, horse-drawn buggies, and bicycles return to local roads.

In a recent safety announcement, the department highlighted the increased presence of agricultural and recreational traffic throughout the warmer months. Rural communities across the state, including Cayuga County, often see more tractors, trucks, and equipment using highways between spring and fall.

The Sheriff’s Office noted that crashes involving agricultural vehicles are five times more likely to be fatal than other types of roadway accidents. To prevent tragedy, drivers are urged to watch for orange slow-moving vehicle triangles, reduce speed, and give extra space to farm vehicles, buggies, and bicycles. Officials also warned that operators of these vehicles may have limited visibility and urged drivers to obey all road markings.

“Safety is no accident,” the department said in its message. The campaign, tagged #sharetheroadcayugacounty, is part of an effort to protect everyone on the road during the busiest seasons for farming and outdoor activity.
