The New York Mets’ season is off to a frustrating start, as they dropped a 2-1 contest to the Houston Astros on Saturday night, losing two of three in their opening series at Daikin Park.
The offense has been the primary concern early on. The Mets managed just one hit, a first-inning double by Juan Soto, and their only run came in the sixth when Jose Siri’s speed allowed him to slide safely home on Soto’s grounder back to the mound. Through three games, the lineup has produced just five total runs.
Despite the lack of run support, Griffin Canning delivered a strong Mets debut. The right-hander allowed two runs on four hits and two walks over 5.2 innings, with his lone blemish coming on a hanging slider that Jeremy Peña sent over the wall.
The bullpen continued its solid work, keeping the Astros scoreless over 2.1 innings.
After a day off Sunday, the Mets will look to get their bats going as they head to Miami for a three-game series against the Marlins, beginning Monday at 6:40 p.m.
