Social Security Payments could be cut or even eliminated

Social Security Cuts Could Eliminate Payments

Tens of millions of Americans could see their Social Security payments reduced or even halted under ongoing efforts by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an initiative led by Elon Musk and sanctioned by President Donald Trump’s administration. The program, originally designed to identify and eliminate government waste, fraud, and abuse, is now facing growing scrutiny as its broad reach into the Social Security Administration (SSA) raises alarms about the future of the program itself.

In recent weeks, internal memos, federal court filings, and public statements have revealed that DOGE’s aggressive push to overhaul SSA operations may have unforeseen — and potentially catastrophic — consequences for the nation’s most vital safety net. Nearly 73 million Americans rely on monthly Social Security payments, including retirees, disabled individuals, and survivors. Those payments are now under threat, both directly and indirectly.

A Sweeping DOGE Crackdown on “Fraud”

The Trump administration’s justification for the overhaul is based on a long-held claim that Social Security is rife with improper payments and fraud. Elon Musk, appointed as a special advisor and given wide latitude under DOGE’s mandate, has repeatedly asserted that up to $700 billion in government benefits are lost each year due to mismanagement, despite independent watchdogs reporting that improper payments represent less than 1% of Social Security disbursements from 2015 to 2022.

“We are taking bold action to protect taxpayer dollars,” Acting SSA Commissioner Lee Dudek said in a March press conference. “We’ve partnered with DOGE to identify inefficiencies and bring modern technology to the agency — even if that means making hard choices about staffing, service delivery, and eligibility enforcement.”

But critics argue that those “hard choices” are already disrupting the ability of Americans to access the Social Security payments and benefits they earned.

Social Security Field Offices Shuttered, Staffing Slashed

DOGE’s influence on the SSA has already been felt across the country. More than 7,000 employees — nearly 12% of the agency’s workforce — are being laid off under a reduction-in-force plan. At least 40 SSA field offices are slated to close by summer, and SSA’s popular phone assistance service is being curtailed. According to a leaked internal memo, officials also considered eliminating phone-based applications for benefits entirely, a move that would especially impact older and disabled Americans who lack reliable internet access.

“This is an assault on the very foundation of Social Security,” said Kathleen Romig, director of Social Security and Disability Policy at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. “You can’t cut staff, close offices, and force seniors to prove their identity online — and then act surprised when people lose access to their payments.”

Indeed, claim processing delays have already reached crisis levels. The average wait for disability claims has soared to 240 days, double the wait time from before the COVID-19 pandemic. Many beneficiaries now report long delays in receiving new benefit checks, difficulty changing direct deposit information, and a lack of response from SSA offices.

In a dramatic development, a federal judge earlier this month issued a temporary restraining order blocking DOGE affiliates from accessing sensitive SSA databases. The ruling, prompted by a lawsuit filed by two labor unions and a civil liberties group, found that DOGE had gained “unbridled access” to personally identifiable information — including medical records, Social Security numbers, and financial data — without proper legal authorization or safeguards.

U.S. District Judge Ellen Lipton Hollander wrote that DOGE’s data collection efforts amounted to a “fishing expedition” in violation of federal privacy and administrative law. The judge’s order demanded that Musk and DOGE delete any non-anonymized data in their possession and undergo proper SSA training before being allowed to resume limited access.

In response, SSA Acting Commissioner Dudek threatened to cut off agency-wide IT access, a move that would effectively halt all Social Security payments. “My anti-fraud team would be DOGE affiliates. My IT staff would be DOGE affiliates,” Dudek said. “I will follow the order exactly and terminate access by all SSA employees to our IT systems.”

Social Security: A Growing Political Firestorm

The fallout from these developments has ignited a political firestorm. At town halls across the country during spring recess, constituents expressed outrage over the apparent politicization of Social Security. In Baltimore, one woman told her congressman, “We earned our Social Security!” while others demanded answers over staffing cuts and service reductions.

Lawmakers from both parties have voiced concern, but President Trump and his administration remain steadfast. “We are going to root out fraud, waste, and abuse — no exceptions,” Trump said during a campaign stop in Florida. “The DOGE team is delivering real savings. We’re not touching benefits — unless you think fraud is a benefit.”

Musk, for his part, has doubled down, describing Social Security as “the biggest Ponzi scheme in American history” and insisting DOGE is “modernizing the federal government.”

What Happens To Social Security Payments Next?

While current Social Security payments have not yet been stopped, experts warn that the trajectory is deeply concerning. The Biden-era modernization plans have been shelved. Instead, SSA is implementing new identity verification policies that require in-person visits for anyone unable to use the agency’s online tools. With field offices closing and long waits already in place, this creates a potential disaster for low-income, rural, and elderly Americans.

“This isn’t about fraud,” said one retired SSA official speaking anonymously. “This is about shrinking the government so small you can’t see it — or collect your check from it.”

If DOGE continues unchecked, millions of Americans could find themselves without the Social Security payments they rely on. Whether this becomes the tipping point for public backlash or a permanent reshaping of the SSA remains to be seen. But the message from many voters is clear: they aren’t just watching — they’re furious.
