Bath man charged after sidewalk fire, threats, and assault on officer

A Bath man is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly setting fire to rubbish and assaulting a police officer during a chaotic incident on Liberty Street earlier this week.

Police arrested 28-year-old Dominick Hawley on March 27 after responding to a report of burning debris outside 56 Liberty Street. According to the Village of Bath Police Department, bystanders saw a man on the second floor throw burning trash out the window while making threatening statements. A bystander managed to extinguish the fire before first responders arrived.

Officers identified Hawley as the suspect. After an initial investigation, they attempted to arrest him, but he reportedly resisted and became combative. Police say Hawley also assaulted one of the officers during the struggle.

He now faces several charges, including attempted arson in the second degree, making a terroristic threat, and second-degree assault—each classified as felony offenses. After being treated and released from a hospital, Hawley was transported to the Steuben County Jail. He is currently being held on bail.
