Dundee Central School unveils $28M capital project with no tax increase

The Dundee Central School District is asking voters to approve a sweeping $28 million capital improvement project that would modernize outdated infrastructure while avoiding any tax increase.

The district announced the proposal on March 20, outlining a plan that focuses on safety, updated learning spaces, and improved athletic and fine arts facilities. The project, set to begin in spring 2026 and wrap up in fall 2028, will be funded entirely through a mix of state building aid, capital reserves, and existing district resources.

Three-quarters of the project’s cost will go toward upgrades that directly benefit students, including enhancements to STEM classrooms, music and performing arts spaces, and athletic facilities. Key priorities include addressing aging HVAC systems, improving security at the school’s main entrance, and replacing failing mechanical systems such as boilers and plumbing.

Originally built in 1938, the school has undergone multiple renovations over the decades, but officials say the oldest parts of the building now require major updates. The proposal also includes site work—such as sidewalk and parking lot replacements, track resurfacing, and a new playground to meet ADA standards.

Superintendent Chris Wood emphasized the importance of acting now, while financial conditions are favorable. “The work included in this project ensures our District is well-positioned to provide the best education and extra-curricular opportunities possible in a safe, modern facility,” he said.

Voters will decide on the proposal Monday, March 31, from noon to 8 p.m. at the Public Meeting Room in Dundee Central School. Tours of the school can be arranged through the superintendent’s office.
