New York is seeking a USDA disaster declaration for farms in Oneida, Lewis, Herkimer, Oswego, and Madison counties after severe winter weather caused major damage, Governor Kathy Hochul announced. The declaration would make affected farms eligible for low-interest emergency loans.
Between January 6 and February 25, extreme cold, heavy winds, ice, and over 180 inches of snow led to dozens of collapsed structures, including barns, causing an estimated $15–$20 million in damage. More than 60 farms were affected, with significant losses in livestock and infrastructure.
State Agriculture Commissioner Richard Ball emphasized the challenge, noting that the storm not only damaged crops but also livestock and essential farm structures, making recovery difficult. Officials are urging the USDA to approve aid quickly.
