Grocery inflation steadies, but prices stay high

Overall grocery inflation may be slowing, but many essential items remain costly, according to new federal data.

Egg prices surged over 10% in a single month and are now nearly 60% higher than last year, largely due to bird flu disruptions. Beef, cereal, and bakery goods also saw increases, even as prices for milk, pork, and frozen foods dipped. Despite the leveling off, Americans are still feeling the sting at checkout.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell acknowledged lingering frustration, noting that prices rose sharply in past years and haven’t dropped. The Fed is keeping interest rates steady for now, as economic growth projections turn gloomier.
