Tompkins Build – Pathways to Apprenticeship is launching in Tompkins County, providing high school graduates and career changers with hands-on training for well-paying union construction jobs. Participants earn wages while gaining industry certifications and essential skills.
With rising demand for construction workers, the program connects trainees with local unions and major projects like SouthWorks in Ithaca. It also supports marginalized individuals by offering legal assistance and mentorship, with female foremen helping to empower women in the trades.
Modeled after successful programs in Syracuse and nationwide, Tompkins Build aims to replenish the aging workforce and promote construction careers. Officials hope to shift perceptions and encourage more young people to explore trades as a viable alternative to college.
