Clay Holmes announced as Mets Opening Day starter

Clay Holmes has been named the New York Mets’ Opening Day starter as he transitions from reliever to starter. Manager Carlos Mendoza praised Holmes’ performance in spring training, saying, “He earned it… we’re comfortable with him going on Opening Day.”

Kodai Senga, working his way back from injuries, is expected to pitch one of the first five games. He starts Friday’s spring training game, aiming for about four innings.

The Mets’ rotation also includes David Peterson, along with two from Griffin Canning, Paul Blackburn, and Tylor Megill. Unlike Canning and Blackburn, Megill has minor-league options.

The team is currently shorthanded, with Sean Manaea (oblique) and Frankie Montas (lat) sidelined. However, Manaea, already throwing again, is expected back by mid-to-late April, while Montas could return in May or June.

The Mets open the season on March 27 against the Astros in Houston, followed by a series against the Marlins in Miami. Their home opener at Citi Field is set for April 4 against the Blue Jays.
