Cayuga County lawmakers are weighing a new vehicle use tax to generate revenue and prevent staffing cuts at the local DMV. If approved, the tax would take effect in 2026.
According to reporting this week by The Citizen proposal, set for a public hearing on April 22, would charge $10 for vehicles under 3,500 pounds and $20 for heavier ones. Legislators say the tax would help offset budget cuts that threaten customer service at the DMV. Similar taxes are already in place in 39 other New York counties.
Supporters, including former County Clerk Brian Scanlan, believe the tax offers a needed financial boost while maintaining essential services. A final vote is expected this spring.
