Gov. Kathy Hochul has barred workers who participated in the recent prison wildcat strike from being hired for state service jobs. Announcing the executive order Tuesday, she also recommended their removal from the Central Registry of Police and Peace Officers, effectively preventing them from becoming police or peace officers in New York.
The 22-day strike ended after four negotiation attempts between the state and the correction officers’ union. Hochul emphasized public safety, acknowledging National Guard and Department of Corrections personnel for maintaining order. About 2,000 workers who failed to return to their posts have been terminated.
The state is now prioritizing recruitment efforts, including expanding hiring initiatives, social media campaigns, and lifting residency requirements to attract new correction officers.
