Unemployment claims in NY double in one week

  • Staff Report

New York saw a sharp rise in unemployment claims, with new filings jumping to 30,166 for the week ending March 1, up from 14,538 the previous week, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

While jobless claims spiked in New York, overall U.S. claims fell to 221,000, a decrease of 21,000 from the prior week. New Hampshire experienced the highest percentage increase in claims, while Rhode Island saw the largest decline.

The surge in claims may indicate shifting economic conditions, though broader national trends remain steady. Experts will be watching for further fluctuations in the coming weeks.
