Most plastic can’t be recycled, so New York shifts focus

As plastic waste builds up, New York is turning from recycling to reduction, according to a recent report. Many assume most plastics are recyclable, but only hard plastics like soda bottles qualify. Items like plastic bags and packaging are often discarded, leading Albany’s recycling program to emphasize reuse and reduction.

Since China stopped importing U.S. recyclables in 2018, American cities struggle to manage plastic waste. Recycling is costly, and only 5-6% of plastic actually gets repurposed. Critics argue that misleading marketing, like the recycling logo, confuses consumers about what’s truly recyclable.

Lawmakers are pushing the Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act, aiming to cut plastic use at its source. While industry groups argue for alternative solutions, environmentalists say real progress depends on reducing plastic production altogether.
