New York’s flu season, which saw an unprecedented 432,700 cases, appears to be winding down after a steep decline in infections. Cases peaked at nearly 55,000 in early February but have since dropped 60%, suggesting the season may not extend into late spring as in previous years.
While flu cases remain elevated, with 22,400 reported in early March, the steady decline signals a potential early end. Experts caution that respiratory virus trends are unpredictable, and updated data on March 14 will confirm if the downward trend continues.
Health officials advise vigilance, as flu symptoms can resemble COVID-19 and RSV. Testing is key to determining the cause of illness, especially as seasonal viruses continue circulating.
