Sewage spill impacts Red Creek after pipeline rupture in Walworth

  • Staff Report

A sewage discharge of 3,000 gallons of untreated wastewater entered Red Creek in Walworth early Saturday morning after a force main rupture, according to an announcement from the Walworth SD #1 Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The incident occurred at 3560 Main St. in Walworth at around 2 a.m. and lasted for approximately six hours. The spill was attributed to a broken pipe in the system, prompting an emergency response to contain the contamination. Crews vacuumed the affected area in an effort to mitigate the impact.

Officials did not specify which public areas, if any, might have been affected by the spill. However, with untreated sewage reaching the waterway, concerns over potential environmental and health risks remain.

Under New York’s Sewage Pollution Right to Know Act, the public must be informed of sewage discharges that may affect local waterbodies. Residents seeking more details can visit SPRTK for further information.
