Canandaigua Police Department earns reaccreditation from New York State

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

The Canandaigua Police Department has once again been recognized as a New York State Accredited Law Enforcement Agency, reaffirming its commitment to excellence in public safety and policing standards.

Accreditation through the New York State Law Enforcement Agency Accreditation Program signifies that a police department meets or exceeds rigorous standards in administration, training, and operations. Agencies must undergo a comprehensive re-evaluation every five years to maintain their status.

In January 2025, assessors from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Office of Public Safety conducted an in-depth, on-site evaluation of the Canandaigua Police Department. The review examined policies, procedures, and practices, ensuring compliance with 111 categories of best practices outlined in the accreditation program.

Following this assessment, the department was officially re-accredited on March 6, 2025, after successfully meeting or exceeding all required standards.

The Canandaigua Police Department has maintained continuous accreditation with New York State DCJS since 2010 and was previously accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) since 1993.

The accreditation program provides a structured approach for law enforcement agencies to evaluate and improve their effectiveness, ensuring they adhere to high professional standards. Police chiefs and agency staff must demonstrate that their policies align with state guidelines and reflect best practices in law enforcement.

This achievement highlights the Canandaigua Police Department’s ongoing dedication to accountability, professional development, and quality policing in service to the community.
