Safe Boating Certificate required for all motorized vessel operators starting in 2025

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

Starting January 1, 2025, all operators of motorized water vessels in New York will be required to have a Safe Boating Certificate. The certification can be obtained through either an in-person classroom course taught by certified instructors or an approved online course.

Classroom courses are offered throughout the state, providing hands-on instruction, while online courses allow boaters to complete their training remotely, with successful completion of unit exams required to progress. Those looking to obtain their certificate can sign up for either option at parks.ny.gov/boating/education.

Locally, the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office is offering two upcoming in-person courses:

  • Saturday, March 22, 2025 – Locke Fire Department, Locke, NY (8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.)
  • Sunday, March 30, 2025 – Ira Volunteer Fire Department (8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.)

Both courses are currently open for registration, with limited seats available.
