Tompkins County warns of rising measles risk

Tompkins County health officials are urging residents to get vaccinated as measles cases surge across the U.S. and Canada. Though no cases have been reported in Upstate New York, outbreaks in Texas and New York City raise concerns, especially with local vaccination rates below the 95% needed for herd immunity.

Measles is highly contagious, with severe complications including pneumonia and encephalitis. Officials stress that declining MMR vaccination rates are fueling outbreaks. Only 85% of Tompkins County toddlers are vaccinated, increasing community vulnerability.

To protect residents, TCWH offers low-cost vaccination clinics every Friday. More information is available on their website or by calling 607-274-6604.
