The town of Seneca Falls will once again pay tribute to heroism and community spirit on April 26, as it gathers to celebrate Antonio Varacalli Day. Organized by the It’s A Wonderful Life Festival Committee, the annual event honors acts of courage and selflessness, inspired by the legacy of Varacalli, who died in 1917 while rescuing a drowning woman in the Cayuga-Seneca Canal.
Varacalli’s bravery earned him a posthumous Carnegie Hero Fund Medal, and the town’s ceremony aims to recognize modern-day individuals who embody his spirit of heroism and kindness.
The event will begin at 11:00 a.m. on the Bridge Street Bridge, with the Seneca Falls First Responders leading a patriotic Color Guard presentation, joined by local scouts and the Bedford Falls Mediocre Marching Band Drummers. Attendees will also enjoy performances by the Mynderse Chamber Singers, a formal proclamation marking the day’s observance, and a moving flower ceremony accompanied by the ringing of the Bells of Bedford Falls.
A key highlight of the event is the Antonio Varacalli Essay Contest, open to 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade students from Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s classes. This year’s essay prompt challenges students to consider, “If you could have one superpower, what would it be, and how would you use it to make a positive impact in your community?” Winners will be announced during the ceremony.
Additionally, the town will present two awards to outstanding community members:
- The Community Angels Awards will recognize individuals nominated by local non-profits for their kindness and dedication to service.
- The Antonio Varacalli Hero Award will be given to someone who has demonstrated extraordinary courage and selflessness.
Seneca Falls residents are encouraged to nominate individuals who exemplify these values. Forms are available at Downtown Deli and WomanMade Products on Fall Street, as well as online at therealbedfordfalls.com. The nomination deadline is April 4.
“Antonio Varacalli’s story reminds us that everyday people can do extraordinary things,” said event organizer Haidee Oropallo. “His act of heroism continues to inspire generations, and this event allows us to honor his legacy by recognizing those who make a difference in our community.”
The public is warmly invited to participate in this tribute to heroism and civic responsibility.
