New York business groups are pushing Congress to reject President Trump’s proposed cuts to National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants, warning of severe economic and research setbacks. The NIH provides over $3.5 billion to more than 250 entities in the state, supporting leading biomedical and cancer research.
The Greater New York Hospital Association estimates the funding cap could cost the state up to $850 million, with SUNY institutions alone losing $79 million for critical research. Business leaders argue the cuts would hurt economic growth and employee health access.
New York, the second-largest recipient of NIH grants, relies on these funds for medical advancements. The Business Council of New York State urged congressional leaders to fight the cuts, emphasizing the importance of research investment for the state’s economy.
