The New York State DMV is warning drivers to check for vehicle recalls, as one in five registered cars in the state has an open, unfixed issue. Some involve the deadly Takata airbags, linked to 28 U.S. deaths, which can explode and send metal fragments at high speeds.
The DMV provides an online tool to help drivers find recalls and arrange free repairs or replacements. Other recalls affect child car seats, tires, and vehicle equipment, all of which manufacturers must fix at no cost.
