Three New Yorkers who should have written their autobiography

By Lisa Montalto

When it comes to books, there is nothing quite like an autobiography. Written by those who actually lived the life, you can’t get any closer to the truth. In these books, you will learn about the trials and tribulations directly from the mouths of those who have succeeded, failed, lived, and learned. A biography written by someone else just doesn’t hit the same notes in probing deeper into the person’s psyche and knowing what it was really like to be them.

Let’s look at a few famous people you may have wondered about but have never given us an autobiography.

The first person is the great Neil Diamond who became known as “the Jewish Elvis.” Diamond captured the hearts and minds of fans all over the world. With such musical hits such as, America, Cracklin Rosie, and the stadium anthem Sweet Caroline, there was no denying the cultural impact that Diamond’s music had on the world. Spanning more than five decades, his career was surely filled with many juicy tidbits that the public is dying to know about. It would be especially interesting to read about his journey in his own words. From his beginnings as a writer of top hits for other artists to forging his way to the top of the charts singing his own songs, Neil Diamond is an icon the world can’t get enough of.

New York has certainly handed the world some amazing characters, but one who changed the way we see our reality is the renowned but late Carl Sagan. As an American astronomer, planetary scientist, and one of the best science communicators, he presented information in layman’s terms so the common man could understand. One of his most notable contributions is his research into the possibility of extraterrestrial life. Using the names “Pioneer Plague” and “The Golden Record,” he created messages that went into space in hopes of communicating with an array of extraterrestrial intelligence. Starting his career as a professor at Harvard, he then planted himself at Cornell where he would pen many papers and successful books, such as The Dragons of Eden, Boca’s Brain, and The Demon Haunted World. As popular as those writings became, they paled in comparison to his massively successful television show, Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, which was the most widely watched American TV series ever. He has given the world so much, yet he deprived us of a book about his life written in his own words. If this guy’s brain were dynamite, he could blow up the entire world with just one thought, and in a way, he did, with his supreme knowledge.

Finally, few people have left us laughing so hard for so many years as the hilarious Larry David. Stepping out from gritty Brooklyn, New York, he couldn’t help but have an edge. However, his beginnings were less than stellar. He was known for cursing at his audience for not laughing at his jokes and storming off stage. No one could have imagined that he would give the world the most unforgettable sitcom of all time, Seinfeld. Basing much of the content for the show on his real-life experiences, he has blessed society with comedic content that has endured for decades. After going off the air as the number one show, it left audiences begging for a reunion. Without denying the tremendous comedic skill of Jerry Seinfeld, it was the stories and writing by Larry David that made the show the astronomical hit that remains popular to this day. For all the gut-bending hilarity he has bestowed upon us, Larry David has still denied the world an autobiography about his shenanigan-filled life that would surely leave readers in stitches.

There is nothing quite like reading about the life experiences of fascinating people directly from their minds, which is why an autobiography is so exciting. Most people who live these lives are not writers, so they enlist the help of a ghostwriter to pen their stories. This makes it easy for even the busiest people to publish an autobiography. We can only hope those with such captivating lives will give us something to read before they leave this earth.
