MONDAY HS BASKETBALL SECTIONAL REPORT: Mynderse girls pull off stunning upset; South Seneca and Honeoye to meet at Big House

The first week of March kicked off with a full slate of Section V boys’ and girls’ sectional semifinal games. Several Wayne-Finger Lakes teams punched their tickets to the finals this weekend, while others saw their seasons come to an end.

The biggest headline came from the No. 8 seeded Mynderse girls, who pulled off a thrilling one-point upset over No. 4 seeded Wellsville on the road at Honeoye Falls-Lima. Despite nearly surrendering a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter, they held on for the win. In other girls’ action, Marcus Whitman also secured a one-point victory, while Lyons cruised past Canisteo-Greenwood, setting up an all-Wayne-Finger Lakes Class B2 sectional final on Friday at Finger Lakes Community College.

On the boys’ side, sophomore Landon Washburn delivered a standout performance, dropping 33 points to lead Honeoye past C.G. Finney. South Seneca edged Wheatland-Chili, setting up a third showdown between the Finger Lakes West rivals in the Class C3 final on Friday at the Blue Cross Arena. Meanwhile, Wayne continued its dominance over Geneva with a nine-point victory.
