How to get a New York Mobile ID in a few simple steps

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that more than 200,000 New Yorkers have enrolled in the state’s Mobile ID (MiD) program, a secure and convenient digital version of a state-issued ID. Designed to enhance privacy and security, the Mobile ID can be used at TSA checkpoints in more than 100 airports nationwide and is increasingly being accepted at businesses for age verification.

For those looking to join the growing number of New Yorkers using MiD, the enrollment process is simple and can be completed in just a few steps:

  1. Download the app – The New York MiD app is available on both the App Store (iOS) and Google Play (Android).
  2. Register your phone number – The Mobile ID can only be linked to one device at a time for security purposes.
  3. Scan your physical ID – Using your phone’s camera, take a picture of the front and back of your valid New York State driver license, non-driver ID, or learner permit.
  4. Take a selfie – Follow the app’s instructions to capture a live photo, which will be checked against DMV records for identity verification.
  5. Wait for verification – Once your information is confirmed, your MiD is activated and ready for use wherever it is accepted.

Important things to know before enrolling:

  • A physical ID is still required – MiD does not replace a physical driver license or ID, as not all businesses accept digital identification.
  • Device compatibility – The app works on iPhone 6 or newer and Android 7 or newer. Jailbroken or rooted devices are not supported.
  • No internet needed for verification – MiD does not require Wi-Fi or cellular service to be used but must be periodically updated online to remain valid.

With its increasing acceptance at airports, businesses, and beyond, the New York Mobile ID is poised to become a standard for secure digital identification. For more information, visit the New York DMV website or download the MiD app today.
