Canandaigua’s commitment to public art continues with the City Council’s approval of a new student-created mural at Kershaw Park’s bathhouse. The project was discussed at the council’s Wednesday meeting, as we reported this week.
The initiative, which has been ongoing for several years, allows local students to contribute to beautifying public spaces through collaborative mural painting. The latest design, approved by the council, will be installed at the Kershaw Park bathhouse later this year.
However, one aspect of the mural required revision before final approval. A quote included in the design incorrectly attributed a statement about swimming education to John Kershaw, the park’s namesake. Council Member Doug Merrill pointed out that historical records indicate the sentiment was more likely expressed by philanthropist Mary Clark Thompson, who established a swimming school in 1906.
The project’s organizers agreed to adjust the wording to reflect historical accuracy while maintaining the integrity of the artwork.
Council members praised the initiative, emphasizing its positive impact on the community.
The mural is expected to be completed this summer.
