Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has officially entered the mayoral race, emerging as the Democratic frontrunner, according to recent polls. His campaign focuses on public safety and a moderate approach, appealing to many of the same voters as current Mayor Eric Adams, whose political struggles helped pave the way for Cuomo’s bid.
Despite his strong polling numbers, Cuomo’s past remains a major hurdle. Allegations of sexual misconduct and controversy over his handling of COVID-related nursing home deaths continue to shadow his candidacy. Attack ads have already begun targeting him, and congressional Republicans are keeping scrutiny on his record.
Cuomo, however, retains a loyal following from his COVID-era leadership, has proven fundraising strength, and boasts key infrastructure achievements. Whether his appeal outweighs his scandals will be decided in the June 24 Democratic primary.
